Yes, good point.
Find the disk Utility application within the Utilities folder inside your Applications folder on your hard drive.
Launch Disk Utility.
Interact with the outline to select your hard drive. Usually, all you need to do is interact with it by pressing Control-Option-Shift-Down Arrow and you'll hear the details of your drive. Simjply stop interacting by pressing Control-Option-Shift-Up Arrow and move to the Verify Disk Permissions button. After the system is done with verifying, press the Repair Disk Permissions button. The whole process should only take a few minutes, maybe five.

Where do I go to do these verifications and repairs? When you say for those new to the Mac to do something like this, remember that we don't know how to follow your advice unless you tell us.

Thanks

Folks, especially those new to the Mac, don't forget to verify and repair disk permissions before and after updating to 10.4.4. You won't have to reboot after the first verification and repair but you'll have to reboot after updating. Don't forget: it's not enough to just repair permissions, you have to verify and then repair. I personally noticed VoiceOver running more smoothly after the process.
