Not to disagree here, and feel free to ignore this message entirely, but I'd imagine you can reproduce your ftp's behavior of sending emails simply by attaching finder actions to incoming directories. Someone drops a file in the incoming directory, and an email could automatically be generated to let the administrator know a new file has arrived. You could script all sorts of things based on contents that shows in logs with a combination of grep, and apple scripts. Now, can the built-in ftp server do these things? Yes it can. Can it do it out of the box? No, it can't. However, it *could* be made to do these things, and that my friends is the power of OSX.

Have you ever used the Rumpus FTP server? I have tried the in- built server and I stand by what I said completely, Rumpus is an altogether more powerful and flexible application. For instance, can the in-built server send a designated E-Mail to a designated address when certain things happen? I don't remember seeing that functionality if it can. As for running it as a system service, is not that the way that the in-built server runs?

power? what power?
and don't you think that makes it more secure that it won't let it
run as a system service, and would if there is just a different way
to do it and you just have researched it good enough to find out how.

and what about writing a cronjob to do this. and what is wrong with
starting it up at start up??????
