Thanks Joe, I will be interested in this and shall check it out. I guess there's tools for the Mac that will let me do this either from in the gui or the commandline. I imagine from the gui is Xcode/Xtools so that probably isn't going to be then an option.

tnx

Hi Scott,

You might try Objective C. It's a good starter language since it's a superset of C. Smaller "vocabulary" and less of the complicated stuff you find in C - and you can reach down into C when you need more low level power. You don't need XCode (which we know not to be very VO friendly) to start with Objective C. You can work in Terminal. Good starter book is Stephen Kochan's book "Programming with Objective C" (may be an electronic version around). Apple also has an Objective C primer and language guide in their developer docs. Once you have Objective C down you can move on to using Cocoa with Objective C (Cocoa's "native" language).

Thanks Joe and your more than welcome. If there's some strange, I'll probably find it. grin Yeah just call me the hacker. See this is why I want to learn to code, I think when I was yonger I didn't really think I'd enjoy it, but now I think if I can master the syntax, I could really get into developing/porting software. I am joining Book Share so imagine there will be some good boooks on learning C/C++ and then I can start figuring out Coco and the like.

Scott. You rule. So, it appears VO takes precedence and cuts out the katie speech if VO and katie set to different voices. Blah. That's not a show stopper I guess but not very elegant either. Won't be an issue when we rely completely on VO to provide katieplayer accessibility.

As for the speech engines, yes, Apple could do the same in terms of speed range...I suppose they decided to reign the adjustments in a bit. I hadn't noticed the difference in speed ranges provided by VO vs. katieplayer.

So, again, thanks for the troubleshooting/testing/problem-solving!

Joe, yes in fact it does matter. I did a few tests.

1. I set Katieplayer to use Fred which is the default voice I use for VO. 2. Went into the sleep settings menu and it worked perfectly, but yes Katieplayer's voice and VO's voice must be set the same. It doesn't seem to matter if you have other voices set for other parts of VO or the system etc. 3. I turned VO off and set a different voice in KatiePlayer and it worked just fine. 4. I set Katieplayer's voice differently from VO while it was off and as soon as I turned VO on, it killed the speech in the sleep options menu. 5. Turning VO back off had no affect and speech was gone while in the sleep options menu and so had to quit the program

I did notice you guys get more speed from the voices than VO does itself. WOuld be nice if Apple would allow for a greater range in speed.
So that solves teh mystery.

tnx
