Granted you can always or most always just add a firewire card. I did for
my g3, and it works just fine. I am not running tiger though.
the machines referenced below do look tempting!

Yes, the firewire requirement is really shorthand for assuring that
the Mac is powerful enough. That said, external DVD or target disk
mode is almost a necessity for loading Tiger on a CD only system, and
you will need FireWire for either of those.
