Well I've had to have my Ibook serviced and I can't speak highly enough of Apple in this regard, the machine is 3 years old and well out of the warrantee period but apple treated the machine as though it were under warrantee anyway, I guess that wouldn't have happened had the machine been built from scratch using various components etc.

Hi Gordon,
I think the more technically versed can answer the question about Apple selling components for sure, but I don't believe they do. I think this sort of thing would have to be done via a third party vendor. I would assume that now that there are the Intel Macs, one will be able to piece together Macs from scratch. I don't think Apple indorses such a method and, to me, like you said and Dennis said, I'd rather just by the whole package from Apple and be certain as to exactly what I'm getting. I think the ages old notion that some Windows PC folks have that a system isn't good unless you can constantly fiddle and "upgrade" specific components is, unfortunately,
carrying over to this "new Mac" world.

This raises the point actually John. Do Apple sell the motherboards and other components for the Mac as separate items? I have to agree with Dennis though. If you buy a Mac pre-built, then you know what you're getting and
it just works. I had a quick look at and play with an Intel IMac on
Thursday. Very nice machines, and I intend to buy one later this year.

Hi Gordon,
Good points. Yes, I am no fan of Dell either. I've heard so
many horror stories from both individual and corporate users about HD
failures and other annoyances right out of the box. When you put that
into perspective, regardless of a few bucks, it's still a better value
to build a system yourself in the Windows world.
As I said, I don't do it much any more, so I haven't really gone
beyond the research for the system I am using, which is pretty much a
high end job that ran me about $800 in total when all was said and done.

I also have no idea what the costs are by comparison for a Mac
system done from scratch. I'd be curious to hear of future findings.
