Hi Dan. This is very interesting. If that's the case, then I bet we
could come up with a similar device home brew. Tell you what I did
though to get around the issue of no monitor. I use a home brew
switch unit which switches the keyboard and monitor between the Mac
and 3 PC's. Actually, it also switches serial ports, but of course
they don't exist on the Mac. Also I use a Blue Tooth keboard most of
the time. Anyway, all I did was modified the switch so that the
video sync lines go high when the switch is set to divert the signal
to the Mac. So, the monitor doesn't have to be switched on, and
things still works. The Mac still thinks it has a monitor. So I bet
that's all these little boxes do. Certainly worth while, and a great
tip.

Hello everyone,
A while back there was a bit of a discussion regarding problems
with the DVD player initializing. This was because no monitor was
connected to the Mac mini.
Recently I had an old CRT monitor go bad. This unit was connected
to my Mac mini.
So, I decided to purchase a DVI to Composite or SVGA adaptor.
This adapter is around $19 and on one end it has the DVI connecter
to plug into the Mac and on the other end is a box with an RCA
connecter and a SVGA connecter.
I accessed the Video preferences and pressed the Find Display
button and the computer selected the correct driver.
The nice thing about this little item is that the computer is now
happy because it thinks it really has a screen connected to it. And
it lets the DVD player work just fine.
While I realize that most people will want a real monitor, I just
thought I'd mention this just in case someone would like to use
this on a Mac mini instead of purchasing another monitor.
