Scott
Folks, finally made a tun of progress on the sleep issue and thanks
to Justin who was good enough to test and report back to me his
success with the test.
I found that reinstalling did fix whatever the hell went so wrong,
but what I did learn was that one particular option can have a
significant impact on the entire process.
By checking the option Require password to wake this computer from
sleep or screen saver which is found in System Preferences/Security,
you in fact get some interesting results.
If this box is checked and you put your computer to sleep two things
happen. First if you just hit a key or press the mouse, the machien
wakes up and expects a password, if none is entered, the machine will
go back to sleep within 10-15 seconds. The second thing to note is
that if you set your machine to wake at a particualr time, or run
some shceduled event with thsi checkbox checked, the machine will
wake as expected, but because you haven't entered a password, the
machine will go back to sleep within again, 10-15 seconds. Thus, if
you wanted to run some cron job or other event, but maintain
security, you can't.
So, I've suggested to Apple that they modify this behavior to run an
event without user input and not allow the machine to go to sleep.
Now how they will accomplish this, I do not know, but its a show
stoper if you choose to use the sleep function. So I learned a lot
during this process and wanted to share the results with you all.
