To restore from the trash, I go to trash using the menu in finder.
Then I select the item to be restored.
Then the item can be restored using the 'undo move' choice in the edit
menu.

I don't mind deleted items going to the trash because many times I
have recovered from making mistakes. But there is a real need for the
ability to cut, and not just copy.
