Hey Holly, After you've navigated to the splitter, move the mouse pointer to the VoiceOver cursor with Control-Option-Command-F5. Then click the physical mouse button on your MacBook and keep holding it. While holding it down with one hand, you can use your other hand to move the mouse pointer down by sliding your finger down the track pad. It doesn't matter if you overshoot the bottom of the window so you can do it once or twice. Then let go of the mouse button. that should do the trick.

I was reading in the archives that you can turn off message content area by interacting with the splitter and moving it down. I also read that you have to move the mouse as well. I'm using a macbook with a track pad and I cna't figure out how to move the mouse. I turned on the mouse keys, but I'm not sure how to accomplish this. I find teh behavior annoying and I'd like to turn it off. Thanks for any help.
