One thing that might work for this is to do the following. Go into finder's preferences. Set always open folders in new window. Then set always open windows in column mode. This should solve the problem.Of course, this will create lots and lots of windows you'll need to close when you're done with them, but it will make sure you always get the column mode when you enter a new folder, regardless of what computer it's on.
