Hello Tim, yeah you know the easier thing I now realize is to
actually do this, but I'm not sure exactly how to pull it off yet.
I was able to get my remote machine to allow her computer to connect
to it. In other words, the firewire drive is attached to my box, I
have gotten it worked out so she logs in and the external firewire
drive is mounted to her desktop over the network. This is kind of
handy as I can run backup on her machine and she can even access the
music files from my drive. The problems I see already are:
1. If my machine is offline or gone off to sleep, it will not wake up
for the connection. That would be nice if Apple would make it
possible to have a machine wake when receiving such a request. It
would only be handy for those of us who put our machines to sleep,
but not to dig this argument about whether or not you save any money
by shutting down the box, but lets say I've found it does in fact
save a few dollars. In any event, what I think might be easier is to
write a script assuming its possible and mount her home folder
remotely, run backup on my machine which would back it up as well as
my home folder, unmount it, and move on from there. That would
probably make the most sense so now to go off and figure out how to
write a script that would do exactly this.
Thanks for the info Tim, it was helpful and Backup is a bit of a
bugger to work with, but not as bad as I first thought. I haven't
tried restoring anything with it yet, but I hope its fairly simple.
Guess I'll play with that at some point.

Hi Scott,
I've got this to work for me.
1. Mount whatever volume you wish backed up.
2. Create your New Backup request in the Backup app.
3. Choose the kind of Backup where you select the files/folders.
4. In the Browser for selecting, just keep navigating until you
hear some combination of numbers that really make no sense. Stop
interacting with the Browser and navigate to the right so VO will
tell you what is actually selected. It does allow you to select
mounted volumes. Once you have figured out which one you are on,
then tell it to "Include this folder".
5. Continue on in the normal way you would to choose location and
such.
It should work for you although it's not pretty.
