As far as muting the speakers, if a set of headphones are plugged in, the internal speakers are of course muted. The only thing that isn't muted this way is the startup chime of the machine. You can also mute the speakers via the mute key on the keyboard.

Hi.  Hopefully, later on today I will be the proud owner of a nice
shiny new IMac 20.  I have a question.  Well, 2 actually.  1.  Is
there a way to have the screen go off completely afer a period of
user inactivity?  Yes, I know about the energy saing options.  But I
mean completely off, not just dim.  Of course the rest of the machine
will need to be left on as it will be in use 24/7.  Second question
is does the IMac have a headphones output which can mute the
speakers?  I'd imagine it does ... I doubt that Apple would overlook
something that basic.  Thanks.
