Hi Gordon,

You can get to everything on your system from terminal and yes, if you type:
"ls"
without the quotes at the $ prompt and press enter, you can see all the folders under your home folder. If you type:
"cd /"
without the quotes, you will be at the root level butt unless you have enabled root and are logged in as root, when you type:
"ls"
not everything will show up.

To get a list of commands, type:
"help"
without the qquotes at the $prompt or:
"man bash"
there is plenty of power here.

Hi David. Yes, when I went away and did a couple of other jobs then returned to it, this was what I did. So yes, what I'm seeing is what you describe. Thanks. Makes sense now. So I presume then that one can get to folders below your home directory via Terminal? I did briefly play with Suse linux A FEW YEARS AGO, BUT DIDN'T GET FAR. I'D REALLY LIKE TO GET MORE INVOLVED WITH THIS KIND OF THING. I'M HOPING TO MYGRATE ONE OF MY PC'S to LINUX shortly, so it would help. But anyway, thanks for this.

Hi Gordon,

When you enter terminal, you are probably already logged in. Use VO navigation to take a look at the screen and you should find something like the following:
Last login: Mon Aug 7 10:08:08 on ttyp1
Welcome to Darwin!
appleseed:~ davidpoehlman$

Of course, your log in name will be there instead of mine. When I have stuff to copy into terminal, I copy it to the clip board and paste it in to the terminal window. Take a look at the result with VO navvigation and if you don't see your name at the bottom, just press enter and then read the output again.

I hope this makes sense, but if you need further help, feel free to drop me a note.
