The Mac and U3 Devices

Most of my peripherals are USB or U3-compatible, but unlike Windows, 
Tiger doesn't recognize them.  Is there a way to set parameters in the 
VoiceOver Utility or System Preferences, to activate any drivers built 
into Tiger to interface USB-driven devices.  For example, I have 
speakers that are "plug-and-play, but don't have software included with
