I've changed the subject to reflect the fact that this is a current problem related to Gutenberg's updating of ebooks older than #10,000 and applies to Safari access.
There's certainly something wrong with the current operation of the gutenberg.org site. Under Safari when you select links to some files, such as from a search for "Don Quixote", these show up as downloaded files with the "decompression failed" message that Dan reports, while Internet Explorer loads a web page for that item, with working links to individual audio or text entries. The downloaded files from Safari are mistagged with a .gz extension (e.g., 7094.gz). In fact, they appear to be html files with the contents of the web pages that you should have been directed to (http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/7094/ for the previous example). Because they are identified as .gz files but are not compressed, you get the "decompression failed" message. You cannot navigate to the etext address by entering the http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/7094/ address directly; you get a page not found or unavailable message. Their current statement on this page is: "We are gradually updating all eBooks older than #10.000, and in the process, moving them to a new filing system." This is something that has to be fixed at their end.
