Gutenberg may not work correctly for any of the older titles right
now. My guess is that it was hit-or-miss whether a particular
entry happened to work under Internet Explorer.

Here's another suggestion. Have people tried using the Online
Book Page search facility hosted at the University of Pennsylvania
site for alternative access to etexts? You can get working links to
some of the entries that are currently not accessible with Gutenberg.

The URL for the main page is:
http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/

or you can go directly to the search page for books online at:
http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/search.html

Excerpted from "About the Online Books Page":

What This Is

The Online Books Page is a website that facilitates access to books
that are freely readable over the Internet. It also aims to encourage
the development of such online books, for the benefit and edification
of all.

Major parts of the site include:

-An index of thousands of online books freely readable on the Internet
-Pointers to significant directories and archives of online texts
-Special exhibits of particularly interesting classes of online books
-Information on how readers can help support the growth of online books

This project was started by a digital library planner at University of
Pennsylvania when he was a student at Carnegie Mellon University.
Since 1999 the Online Books Page has been hosted by the University of
Pennsylvania Library who provide the server, disk space, and network
bandwidth for the project.

Just a suggestion for something to try. YMMV.
