Rich, I think you may be using the latest version of iTunes, version 7, while
Tim Kilburn's notes for this discuss list started out with the first version of
iTunes to support podcasts, version 4.9, and then the modified version of
instructions for the VO Wiki was based on iTunes 6.

Your problem with hearing "unknown" is a major gripe about iTunes 
accessibility.  The iTunes instructions in the Wiki were meant to tell you
what each option field was.  I understand that there were major organizational
changes for iTunes 7 menus, but I never upgraded to this version.

Podcast subscriptions work fine.  In fact, there is even a shortcut if you
know you want to subscribe to a particular RSS feed:  you can use Safari and
replace the "http:" prefix with "itpc:" for the URL, and get an immediate 
subscription in iTunes to this podcast.

Maybe Tim or someone with iTunes 7 can help with current information?
This is such a common problem.
