I think I may have solved the mystery. The aiff files appeared in 
~/Music/itunes/iTunes Music/Unknown Artist/Unknown Album and in fact the 
last one I did as a test is still there. But that's not where the mp3 ends 
up. It ends up im ~/usic/itunes/iTunes Music/Visiovoice. I didn't realize 
it would be put under Visiovoice. I found it when I used spotlight and 
then I had it shown in finder so I could find out where it was. this was a 
short file and it worked; now i'm trying it with a longer file since I 
still don't think I see the book I tried yesterday. will let you know if 
this longer one works.
