This is the only list where I've seen this particular topic constantly brought up, and I"m a little curious why that is. I've been meaning to inquire for a while.

To me, writing your response and including the original text below is natural and correct. In fact, When people do it the other way around, I often don't bother reading the message, because I don't have time to waste reading messages I already have...or even bits of them I've already have. Quoting them down below let's you easily choose whether or not to refer to them. Quoting a message on top is extremely discourteous to me, except in very special circumstances, like when you're responding throughout the original text, (i.e. to a series of questions)

Now, that being said, I like personalities to shine through in email as much as that limited medium will allow, so I don't mind whatsoever if other's do it whatever way they like, and certainly will not tell people what to do, or how they should compose their messages, so in no way am i suggesting people should do it my way. I'm just curious why, as a general rule, you would want to waste so much time reading quoted messages?

I'm also not interested in debating the points, only very curious to hear differing opinions on this. Like i said, top quoting is an irritant, but I like people to be able to do whatever they want.
