Everything was cranked. It totally soundedlike crap. Many folks have
complained about the audio on those laptops. The best laptops for audio
were the higher end gateways and the conpaq presarios, which actually had
little ports on the bottom which acted like bass cannons. Gave it some low
end that made those laptops sound more like a tv set than a cell phone.

I can't be sure but I would say that there had to be something set in the
Sound preferences that was causing that. My MacBook has small speakers
with typical small speaker range but play plenty lound. At 80% volume, I
can hear VO speaking within my class of 70 students.
