I tried playing with adium a couple months ago. I was having the same
issue where it would crash whenever bringing up a message window. I
did a search on their web site for the error I got, and there were
some bugs on there that suggest that there are currently some
conflicts between adium and voice over. Hopefully they fix them at
some point, because the program looks promising.
