for your first question

hide any and all tool bars you run in to, they are othing but screen  
clutter for a blind person.

you can do this in safari by pressing command, option, shift, backslash.

and hide the bookmarks bar also, I don't know the keystroke though.  
this will give you allot more stability in safari and many other  
programs.
