I don't understand why Apple didn't think to create a Voiceover type
application for the Iphone.

A couple of things...

Adding to what Holly has said, I'd also like to point out that many
popular media players under Windows only work out of the box because
of extensive scripting done for them, like Winamp for example. If
you only wanted to use iTunes to play, stop, skip, etc, you could use
it, technically, without scripts. It's the more complicated features
which require them, and that's true for many players.

As for the iPhone touch screen. Several of us have proposed ways in
which it could be easily used by the blind. It's time for the VI
community as a whole to shed its phobia about advancements in
technology. The same arguments were used against GUI's back in the
days of command-line programs. The community was terrified of the
point-and-click interface. Like that, in time, we will find that
we'll be able to use touch screen technology as well as anyone else.
