Hello everyone,

There is absolutely no reason to shut down a Mac unless it crashes or is running slow. The amount of power drawn during the startup surge is equivalent to a couple of days on Sleep. You should, however, do Repair Permissions about once a week. Only badly-written programs require the RAM to be cleared by a Restart.

James, as they always say, don't believe in what the papers say! I might not use a mac, but I can sure tell you that what you heard sounds like fiction to me, because, if you think about it, why would shutting it down and/or restarting it damage computers? The features are designed to clear the RAM that was filled up in your computing session, and nothing else. Hope that helps! ----- Original Message ----- From: "James Jolley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "General discussions on all topics relating to the use of Mac OS X by theblind" <[email protected]>

Subject: To sleep or to shut down?

Hi folks,

Just to clear up something I was adviced and have read elseware. Is it true that it is best not to shutdown your mac? I have been told that it's best to put it to sleep rather than shutting it down. Is this fact or fiction? It's said that if you restart it a lot, you could possibly damage it! Is this true or just rumours?

Best
