We have to stick to MP3 for DAISY media as it is played by all the
DAISY playback devices.

hmmm, if the mac can play ogg files you could slice 33% to 50% off the
size of that mp3 file too.

OK here is what I have been able to do. I have taken the soundtrack
of the
Studio Ghibli film Whisper of the Heart and bundled it into a DAISY
2.02 book
format. I choose this film because the story is told mainly by
means of the
dialog and it was rated for general audiences so that should I ever
need to
demonstrate this I could do so to any audience.
This "book" will announce it's title as all good DAISY books do and
then
start playing the soundtrack of the movie as a single audio file.
Now as I do not have access to the screen play I am not able to add
more
navigation. I could split the soundtrack at the DVD chapters if
needed for
example. But given that DAISY can remember where you are in the
"book" I'm
not sure that having navigation with in a movie is all that
necessary.
Here are the steps I used.
I used Handbreak to move the film to my hard drive and the used the
Mac
program AC3 to convert the MP4 file to an MP3 audio file. This
dropped the
size of the soundtrack on a 1 hour 47 minute film to just over 13
megabytes.
I then hand edited the ncc.html, .smil and other files for the
DAISY portion
this wasn't that much of a job as I only had two mp3 files to work
with, the
recording of the title and the soundtrack itself.
The whole file is less than 15 megabytes. Better quality sound
would, of
course increase the size but even at the best recording quality it
would fit
onto a single CD.
It plays without problems on a VictorReader, AMIS, TPBreader, the
Curtain
experimental Mac reader and validates with the DAISY 2.02
validator. I have
the audio in playable order so it will also play on any CD player
which
accepts MP3 files.
I do not feel that I can send this to anyone as I do not have
permission from
either Studio Ghibli, or its English language distributor, Disney
to do so.
Should I ever attend any DAISY meetings I would be happy to
demonstrate it.
