For laptop users, do you really need to ever shut down? I generally just close the lid and it goes to sleep. I open the lid and I'm good to go again. I don't think I've actually shut down my machine since I got it earlier this year. I do reboot once in a while for installing updates but that's about it. I think shutdowns are only needed for Windows laptops. I also noticed that if I do have my laptop battery go flat it goes into hibernate which writes out the RAM contents to the drive. Then when I plug it back in it wakes up and restores the state. Very slick.

On a full keyboard, control, option, command and the eject
button will shutdown the computer entirely. The control, command
and eject will restart. Obviously, on a laptop, you need to add
the fn key.

There is a keyboard combination that will do this, but, for
now, the easiest way to shutdown is the control option and letter
m keys to open the menu from finder or any app, and use the down
arrow on the Apple menu until you come to, shutdown. Just hit
enter on this and the machine shoot turn off in a few seconds.

I'm on the road right now, but wanted to play a little bit.
Also, what's the correct way to shut down a mac?

You should hear, secure edit text, which is the area to put
in the pw.
You might have to tab or use the VoiceOver navigatin keys to
find the area,
but, usually, your focus is on it.
