That's a line in/line out jack.  If I plug a microphone equipped headset 
into it and run sound and tell it to detect hardware the mac correctly 
detects the microphone as well as the headset.  This one is a low-end 
model not intended for musicians.  When you have to use a plug that has 
several edges on it to attach to a computer's sound system then the 
manufacturer sold a musicians computer.
