It's a great way of moving around between apps if you strip out the things you don't use and keep the few apps you use heavily there. For example, I have TextEdit in the Dock, and also Terminal (which your probably won't want -- there are accessibility issues, but it's handy if you have a unix background and use command lines). These are things that aren't in the normal setup. You might have AudioHiJack if you do a lot of sound captures.
One reason I had to check about bringing up the VoiceOver Applications menu, and try to do alternative searches for TextEdit under Finder and Spotlight to help troubleshoot your recent problems with deleting TextEdit is that I don't use these to navigate to these apps --- I can use VO-keys+d to go to the dock and arrow arround to the app I want. The help for the dock also tells you how to order apps in the dock the way you most find convenient. I know I pasted it into an early post. Any app you've opened appears in the dock and you can make it stay accessible there if you want (otherwise, it disappears when you close the app). Conversely, if there's something you don't want to keep there, use the contextual menu to remove from the dock. [These are only links -- you can't remove the app itself this way. <smile>) Cheers, Esther
