But I set up a new MacBook  recently and for some reason this wasn't on already.

check Systems Preferences to look at the firewall
settings.  For some reason firewall wasn't turned on by default.  Look under 
Sharing in the Internet & Network category and go to the Firewall tab.
I found a comment in an online forum that this wasn't set on by default, and
when I checked, sure enough, it wasn't.   This was an August MacBook
purchase from Apple.
