Missing off my Desktop

Listers I use to go to my Home folder by doing a command shift H and  
see things like library, movies and music. Now all I see are the  
downloaded programs and no other folders. I wanted to create a new  
folder in the Documents but I don't see it anymore. Does anyone know  
why and how to correct this behavior?
