Um, wait, why would it do that. TimeMachine stores everything in a folder called Backups on the selected drive. I have not read that it erases everything on it. If that's the case, do the smart thing, use Disk Utility and partition the existing drive with a large, and I mean large chunk for TimeMachine.

We're blessed with the ability to make and destroy partitions on the fly now in Leopard, so why not make one just for TimeMachine. If you destroy it and let the OS rebuild it some day, it won't matter unless you're of course missing something and realize it after erasing that partition.
