I don't think the Migration Assistant fine tunes your choices enough to
only copy your mail folders. Sometimes copying an actual application
straight from your old installation would probably fail because there have
been changes. It seems to me, though, that in a lot of cases you could
copy data folders without a problem. When I couldn't compile the version
of screen needed for brltty on leopard, I copied the compiled binary from
my Tiger install; this did work but there was no guarantee. Of course that
wasn't a Macosx component per se. But if there haven't been changes in the
structure of mail folders between Tiger and Leopard, I would think you
could do that. If it fails, even if it messes up your install, the worst
thing that could happen would be that you'd have to reinstall and use the
migration assistant and let it copy all your user info. If you don't mind
it copying all your user info and settings, then just go ahead and use
Migration Assistant in the first place.
