Hello
Here is what I do with my mac, with the application that I use. I
am a student at UC Berkeley and the mac is pretty much all I use for
my work.
in-class Note taking with textedit
writing papers with texshop (and the markup language called latex)
spreadsheets with tables
mail with apple mail
contacts organization with addressbook
some work with ical (calendar)
web browsing with safari
PDFs with preview
recording lectures with audio hijack
music with itunes
That is pretty much it. I like the mac's ability to handle PDF
files, and I definitely feel more organized on my mac with the find
features like spotlight. There is the "massive form oversight" with
multiselect list boxes, which used to work in tiger. This is being
fixed so wouldn't worry too much about it just be aware if you find
that you use multiselect list boxes. I don't much.
You have the ability to use safari in DOM mode, like with jas or
wineyes, or in apple groups mode, where your cursor is just moving
freely about the webpage as it is laid out. This is nice when you
get to know a webpage because youh can move around a bit faster and
more efficiently. DOM mode works ok too with headers and controls
etc. I suppose if you compare it to winbased screenreaders, it is a
bit more sluggish when jumping to headers etc, but perhaps it loads
the pages a bit faster.
Strange thing, when I try to get information about a file or folder,
VO crashes. This is a rather amusing bug and I wouldn't worry about
that either as I am practically the only person here who is
experiencing it.
Mostly everything is doable as long as you find the right program.
If this is not enough, know that you can always run other OSs
through VMWare Fusion, Parallels, or apple's BootCamp.
