sounds like you are seeing the toolbar or you have changed one of the view options I can't remember which one. If you press shift and get a beep, it either means that capslock is on or you have set vo togive you a sound when encountering/typing a capita letter. If that beep has gone away, either you finally turned off capslock or changed athat preference in vo.
