alias results from pressing command-l on an item. you should be able
to delete the ones that have alias.

is there any way to just return them to how they were?
tell ya what after sorting this I am giving it a break for the night.
although it's probably more like an hour.
still having problems with that download issue but will give it
another go after sorting applications.
