Hello Keith,

What you have is the Apple British layout which is clearly different from a PC. Several people have complained about this which is why I asked you to check the Pound key. In the past, different makes of typewriter had slightly different layouts for the non-alphabetic keys, but when computers arrived on the scene, many more signs were required and the various manufacturers chose their own layouts. What we have here, is Apple's choice of layout. I believe you can remap keys but I've never done it as this is the layout I've been used to for years.

Cheers,

Anne

Thanks for that Anne.
now a funny thing the keyboard does indeed say £ under shift 3 as you would expect it to, however things like
@ ", | ~

quote tilda vertical bar etc are still, as far as I am concerned, in the wrong place. Sorry if I offend anyone who are used to the American layout. it's just what I am used to.

Keith

does anyone know how to change the keyboard on my Macbook from american layout to British?

The place to do this is the International pane in System Preferences, but are you sure it's set to American? If Shift-3 gives you a pound sign and Option-3 gives you Number, then your keyboard is already set to British.

also could anyone tell me when using spell checker how do i get it to give me a list of replacement options i.e if i spell a word wrong it will take me there but won't give me any options to replace it

Press command-semicolon and VO will speak the first misspelled word in your text. Repeat this procedure until it speaks the word you want to change, then press Control and click the trackpad button (VO-Shift-m doesn't seem to work for this). Use up and down arrows to find the replacement word you want then press Return.

Cheers,

Anne
