Yes that's how I thought it was but what happens is that I am on the desktop, I highlight my app, then copy it , quit the window , then open Mac HD , then apps folder.
now when I go to paste  it doesn't do anything.

You have to copy and paste folders when you want to move them. The shortcut to get to the Applications folder is Command-Shift-a.
