it depends onwhat you are downloading. Some sites do not allow downloading at all, some content will open and display or play automatically in their respective applications and even control clicking because of the first issue raised here cannot be downloaded. The issue of content opening when clicked can be somewhat mittigated by setting saffari in prefs not to open downloaded files. Having said all this and all things being equal, you just either vo space on a link to a file you want to download if you are traveling using vo with arrows, or tab to the link and press enter. The downloads window appears and the download begins, to monitor the download, use vo to navigate to the "list, interact with it using vo-shift-down arrow, and you will see using vo with arrows the file name and other info about it on a "line. interact with this and you can see the progress and the time remaining. If the download happens quickly, you will not see the process. In the download window, there is a "clear" button, press this button to clear the list when the download terminates so that the next time you download something, you won't have a complicated view to plow through. press command-w to close the window and you are taken back to the page you cane from. Alternatively, while the download is in progress, if you want to start another, you can press command-accent to move back to the page or press vo-f2 twice quickly and pick the page from the window list that appears and press enter.
tip: if you know what you are looking for and it is infact a link and not a button, you can press vo-u to obtain a list of links, type a unique set of characters to the string or at least something that gets you a short list or just up or down arrow through the list which is in tab order till you arrive at the link you want, hit space on it and use vo with down arrow to be certain you are positioned on it. if that does not happen once, use vo+up arrow and you should be there and able to click it if it is clickable see notes above. You can also use the item chooser to do this, vowithi will bring up the item chooser, type as before with the links list and follow the same instructions from there. I hope putting this on the list helps someone and also if there is anything rong with my missive, it will be corrected. Fly nice!
