Very interesting. I'll think about it.

Subject: using a Mac to only run windows or not?:

I've changed the subject line of the thread to discuss this since it bares
and merits discussion and since it is off topic for the original thread
which I quote below for reference.

Hello Scot. It's Hamit again. I just asked because what with people
talkingYou are not dirtying a Mac by putting windows on it and if that's all

you want to do and money is not a consideration, your Mac will serve you
well. I have not found windows xp to be sugnificantly faster on a Mac than
on a *comparable* pc but then the cost of that pc is not sugnificantly
different ehough to justify it's lower price. The Mac hardware is superior
to that of the general pc hardware and the nice thing is that if you ever
want to run the Mac os, you have the best of both worlds. You do not have a

clear option of running mac os on a windows machine.

of XP running faster on a MAC then a PC I was curious as to this applying to
Vista. The only reason that I asked about being able to run Windows on the
MAC ruining the fun of having a MAC is because the way I see it is that
would be like turning the MAC into a PC in a sense. So what would be the
point of getting one if you are going to do that? Plus one if not the main
reason I'd like a MAC is because I want to use the CD burning program Sam
Britton talked about on the blind cool tech pod cast called Dragon Burn. It
sounded really cool because of the ability you have to record live on a CD.
Encase you wandered which MAC I will get because I've made up my mind and I
will get one, I'm going to get an iMAC. They are so hot. I really liked
them. Scot Howell convinced me to get one in a way with his 2 part pod cast
of a MAC too. I'll get one after I get a Vista PC though. You see I have no
clue as how to use a MAC accept for a few things and I can't afford and
don't want to miss out on any E-mails while learning one. So that's why a
Vista PC is my first goal. I have 2 PC's by the way and so I'll replace one
of these 2 junky old PC's with an iMAC. That's all, hope to hear from you
soon.

Hamit - couldn't tell you about Vista and Jaws 9 because I have neither.
from everything I've read, Jaws 9 should be fine, Vista is still buggy under

virtualisation and the graphics support seems lacking to look at, so no idea

if it'd play nice with screen readers yet. If you try this, let us know how
you get on and go in to it not expecting miricals.

As for Windows ruining the mac, many many purists think so. I've seen people

who own everything from mini's through to macbook pros and use windows on
them almost exclusively. Their argument is that it's just like having a
windows box with cooler hardware. That to me feels like they're missing out,

but what I'm trying to say is that it's different strokes for different
folks. Personally, I find the ability to run both OS's at a snap quite cool,

and every time I restart back in to mac os I get a feeling of relief haha.
Find your own balance that makes it easiest for you to do whatever you need
your mac to do, and ignore the purests.

Scott

What about Vista and Jaws 9? I don't remember that being brought up. I'd be
curious to know just how that works. Just as a quick side question. Don't
you guys think that putting Windows on a MAC kind of ruins the fun of having
one?

Oo! Oo!
Who delurked me?

Blinking in bright light and gulping rather nervously.

Um, right, well I have - sort of.
What I mean is my son has set my mac book up so I can dual boot, if I
do nothing it goes in to, spit, windows. If I hit option key it goes
to, sigh, leopard and voice over.

The sad thing is I know nothing other than I can at last free myself from
the dark lord of Seattle and have the tools to defeat the dark arts.

Here's a thing though my son is a software architect who uses a mac to do
his job and has been encouraging me to dump microsludge for a
while now. He works for a mapping solutions company here in the U.K.
called multimap.com and has been active in web accessibility on my and
other blind computer users behalf for some years now. He is very
involved in web 2.0 here in the U.K. but when I can blackmail him in to
doing something for his dear old Dad he is frightfully good about it,
currently he is engaged in reverse engineering a tool for reading talking
newspapers with his pearl script skills and hopefully I will be able to make
this available to other users of T.N.A.U.K publications in the U.K. soon.

Oh dear I do seem to have gone on rather a lot, forgive a garrulous old fool
who really prefers lurking in the background.

Cheers
G
 From glorious Devon, England.
