Hello Simon,
I am also an avid user of skype, and by in large, have endured the
same issues. I just don't think that accessibility was a major
consideration on the part of the developers, but incidentally, it is
usable with VoiceOver.
Just a few quick points:
Yes, logging onto skype can be a pain. As you know, the default
location of the curser upon launch is in the user name field. After
entering that bit of information, you need only press the tab key to
move onto the password field. And if you wish to avoid all this in
the future, you can tab twice to reach the check box labeled
"Remember Password", then one more to reach the sign in button.
Skype lacks a bit in the way of key commands. I would recommend using
the numpad commander feature of VO. It really makes the use of skype
that much easier. Within the feature, have a key set for contextual
menus. I would also recommend that in your skype preferences, you set
the default action for a double click on a given contact-- weather it
be a chat or call, this can help to speed up your use of skype.
I have a bluetooth numerical keypad paired to my macbook, and I just
love using it with skype, and basic navigation of other applications.
Depending on the machine you have, you may want to look into getting
something like this. Mine is by logitech, but I'm sure you can find
many more bluetooth numerical keyboards out there.

Hello Listers,
Has anyone got any experience of using voiceover with Skype? I've
just installed it and I found the process of signing in very
difficult. For instance, it says welcome to Skype and to the right
image and that's all you get from voiceover. I accidentally pressed
enter on welcome to skype and then I got username and ok button with
no text field for the username. It only appeared after I pressed
enter on the actual text username. The same thing happened for
password.
Any tips on shortcut keys etc. would be appreciated. I like using
Skype for making phonecalls as well as for chatting to other people
via skype.
With best wishes
Simon
