Pressing enter on a contact name will call them, no need to click anything. Also, VO-H will read names for many of the buttons that don't have labels automatically. Finally, Skype is a great program for using the Shortcuts tab in Keyboard System Preferences. I set up a key to mute and unmute calls in there. While it has some problems, it does actually work well once you are used to it. It is a whole lot better out of the box on Mac with VO then it is on Windows or Linux. On Linux, in fact, it is totally unusable with Orca.

Hello Simon,

I am also an avid user of skype, and by in large, have endured the same issues. I just don't think that accessibility was a major consideration on the part of the developers, but incidentally, it is usable with VoiceOver.

Just a few quick points:

Yes, logging onto skype can be a pain. As you know, the default location of the curser upon launch is in the user name field. After entering that bit of information, you need only press the tab key to move onto the password field. And if you wish to avoid all this in the future, you can tab twice to reach the check box labeled "Remember Password", then one more to reach the sign in button.

Skype lacks a bit in the way of key commands. I would recommend using the numpad commander feature of VO. It really makes the use of skype that much easier. Within the feature, have a key set for contextual menus. I would also recommend that in your skype preferences, you set the default action for a double click on a given contact-- weather it be a chat or call, this can help to speed up your use of skype.

I have a bluetooth numerical keypad paired to my macbook, and I just love using it with skype, and basic navigation of other applications. Depending on the machine you have, you may want to look into getting something like this. Mine is by logitech, but I'm sure you can find many more bluetooth numerical keyboards out there.
