The problem is you can end up changing sounds for events without
realizing you did so. I think there is part of that table that VO is
not reading or I'm not interpreting it correctly. I need to have
someone with sight to be here next time I look at it.

I'd have to look again, but I believe the problem is the table
for sounds and events didn't seem to read properly. Again, it was a
while ago when I looked and it might have changed under Leopard, but I
think the actual event was not identified as you went down the table
of sounds.

The sounds if you want to add your own would be put in the user/
library/sounds folder. They can be .wav files. I think you can
change some sounds in system preferences under sounds, but I have not
been able to figure out how accessible the process is. For mail, the
sound for new mail is changed in mail preferences under the general
tab.
