Apple's fairly standard when it comes to settings, so I'd look in system 
prefs under keyboard and mouse in the keyboard tab to see how the fn key is 
set and most likely change it since its default is to allow for hardware 
functions for the function keys without fn and to force the need for fn for 
such things as control-option-f8 for vo utility so by default, you have to 
press fn-control-option-f8 which can be quite a handfull.  Much easier to 
press fn-f4 or fn-f5 to control the volume.
