could windows be set to sleep after xx minutes?  it is by default when you 
install it directly.

Right, you are not using boot camp so the drivers may not apply.

actually, with the problems I'm having, I wondered if I somehow triggered
some kind of time-out function. Windows is working fine as long as I'm here
working at the keyboard; then when I walk away and come back I can't do
anything though as I described before windows is obviously still loaded.

    But as far as bootcamp drivrs, it wasn't installing them that got my
sound and keyboard working.
