Mike, I do not know what the key command is on the laptops for unmuting the audio. I know from tests here that you can mute the audio independantly from headphones and speakers. Do you get any system sounds? Have you tried logging into another account to see if you get the same results? I'm not sure and haven't tested it, but the state of the muted audio may not be system-wide. Perhaps creating a test account and givin this a try might help. How about while your at the login prompt if you have your laptop setup for multiple users, do you get audio there? If you have tried all this, then it may be time to contact Apple. Maybe you can explain more on what you were doing at the time, that may help diagnose the problem a bit more.
