it's the tab key.  you should be able to get out of the toolbar by using 
control-option-shift-up arrow.

David, I will try hiding the toolbars. In fact, that's exactly where I
was being stuck: in the toolbar. As for the documents, I was trying to
red a pdf user manual for Nisus writer pro. What's the bab key, David?
