In mail, vo J can be used to jump from the message view to the message
contents. There was a n issue a while back about having the
horizontal splitter set to not show the message contents under it. I
found that I double clicked my horizontal scroll bar and the message
contents was hidden. This is for security reasons as spammers can
detect a message that was opened and using this method prevents such a
thing from happening. If you are in the mail boxes table, you can use
it (VO J) to jump to the messages table. I find this only works going
from the mail boxes to the messages, and not the other way around.
The command in safari was VO CMD J not VO J. They are completely
different and unrelated.
