When I use this command on a received message it reads word by word
and not by single character. What am I missing?

The same way you do with anything else. VO-Shift-Left or Right
Arrow. That's a basic VO command, and I highly recommend that you
take some time to learn the basic VO commands, as you'll need them
frequently.
