changing the volume with my mac minny

Hey guys, alright, it appears that it has changed.  How do i change  
the volume on my mac minny i thought it was f11 and f12?
It seems to bring up some soft of widget thing wish a swish sound  
affect before it speaks it.
Any ideas?
