Hmm. I have my system voice speaking extremely fast for the clock. So,
I mean it has to be something, Darcy got his faster I believe.

System voice rate seems to be a strange variable. As Orin
reports, even if you increase it, the voice still speaks at a slower
rate. This is not just when using the text to audio feature. Even
in Adium or iChat, which uses system voice to read incoming messages
or speak alerts, there seems to be no substantial way of increasing
the speed of the voice.

Hi all,
John Panerease sent me a workflow that uses the "Text to Audio"
function to record a text edit document.
However, it seems to use AppleScript, and I don't know how to
increase it's rait. John told me that it'll use the rate specified
in System Preferences, however this is not the case, as it is very
slow.
I want to make it so I could type, "Rate 350" or something and
it'll increase my rate to 80 or so percent on VoiceOver.
Thanks.
